The formula

4. Leather shoes. Loafers, derbies, chukkas, or very clean minimal leather sneakers.

Why a blazer beats a suit jacket here

A suit jacket separated from its trousers usually looks separated from its trousers. Suiting fabric has a sheen and a formality that stands out next to chinos, and the jacket is cut to sit in a matched set.

A blazer or sport coat is built to be worn alone — heavier or more textured fabric, often patch pockets, softer construction. Navy is the single most useful one; it works with grey, stone, olive and dark denim, which covers nearly every trouser you own.

Where the tie sits

Optional, and most of the time, leave it off. Smart casual with a tie starts drifting toward business professional without quite arriving, and the effect is a suit that's missing something.

Where a tie does work: a knit or textured tie with a sport coat and chinos. The texture keeps it from reading as office wear. A smooth silk tie with a blazer and jeans tends to look like you got dressed for two different events.

• Client dinners and conferences — the default for most industry events.
• Offices on the dressier end of business casual, especially for days with external meetings.
• Dates, where it's the most reliable answer to "how dressed up is too dressed up."

What to avoid

• A suit jacket doing blazer duty. The fabric gives it away.
• Light-wash or distressed jeans. Dark and plain, or chinos.
• Athletic sneakers. A leather sneaker can work under a blazer; a running shoe can't.
• A tie with a patterned shirt and a patterned jacket. One pattern at a time until you're confident.
• A jacket that doesn't fit at the shoulders. It's the one thing a tailor can't easily correct and the thing everyone notices.
